Would you be concerned if your son spanked his teddy bear and when asked why he said “I’m playing Daddy” ?
My eight year old son did this yesterday and when I asked him why that’s was his answer. This was the third time I saw him doing this, so I decided to ask him why. My husband is the big disciplinarian in our house. I discipline also for minor offenses. I think my son is starting to get the wrong idea that the role of a father is to be a cop. How should I deal with this.
TTC for 2.5 years: He is veiwing my husband as a cop.
Clearly he is associating a spanking with his dad, and not anything else. That’s what he thinks he is there for.
Make sure that they get lots of bonding time to play and have fun. If they can build their relationship with fun times and bonding together then your son will see you husband as a father and not a cop.
Talk to your husband about your concern and plan outings for them. They could even just play ball in the yard or something simple like that.
As long as the fun times outweigh the punishments then he will see his dad for more than he does now.
And try to cut back on spankings for all his punishments and have his dad punish him by a time out or taking away a privilege and not just spanking. If he is the only one spanking and you are the only one enforcing other punishments then that is how your son will see you two.
